CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Blake heard humming. No, that wasn’t right. Chanting. Soft and low, almost musical. Curious, she followed the sound through a maze of some kind. It was dark, her surroundings pitch black. Only the walkway she was moving down was lit. Odd

Where was she? Better yet, how had she gotten here?

She came to a fork in the path and studied both ways but it was too dark to tell which one was the right way. Then the chanting, coming from her left, grew louder. She turned down that walkway. A bright light shone from ahead and she picked up the pace.

The end of the path opened to a field of lavender. At least she thought it was lavender. In the center was a man sitting with his legs folded in front of him like a pretzel, and he was floating above the flowers.

She watched him for several moments. Without looking at her, he spoke. “I knew you’d find me.”

“Who are you?” She frowned and looked around. The path she walked on moments ago was gone. She stood in the middle of lavender, several feet from the floating man. “How did I get here?”

“You are in a dream world. I chose this place because it’s beautiful and calming.” He looked at her then with silver eyes with swirls of lilac in them. His hair was pitch black and cascaded over his shoulders in thick waves.

“Why am I here?” Her senses fired to life and she wasn’t sure if she could trust this stranger who apparently kidnapped her in her sleep.

“I didn’t kidnap you. You are free to awaken at any time.” He held out his hand. “I have much to share with you.”

She crossed her arms and glared at the man. “Reading my thoughts is not winning you any brownie points. Who are you?”

“Brownie points?” He frowned. “Ah, you mean I’m trying to win favors from you.” He lowered to the ground and stood. “You have a great power, far more powerful than any healer and Graxecon. It is that power, the magic that flows in your blood that the rogites want. It is also the same power that will destroy them.”

Blake stepped forward. “Are you a Graxecon?”

“I am and a guide of sorts, sent to aid you in your journey.”

She raised her brows. “Like a spirit guide?”

He nodded. “I will help you control your magic because it is growing. You need to learn to use it.”

“I know, that’s why we are going to the Graxecon.”

He tsked and shook his head. “They can’t help you. Not like I can. They destroyed their own source of power, the link to the gods.”

She had no idea what he was talking about and still wasn’t convinced he could help. “I thought you were a Graxecon. How do I know you'd be any better than the High Leader?”

“They will fear you and tell you to leave them. It is what they do. They isolate themselves from the rest of the planet and the other races. The High Leader fears the powers of the gods and will fear your power.
